[•REC], directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza and produced by Filmax, is one of the horror films that have marked a milestone in the cinematographic history not only of Spain, but also worldwide. The first film, shot in ‘found footage’ style, follows the experiences of Ángela Vidal, a reporter who accompanies a group of firefighters during their working day. In the middle of the night they receive an alert call from a building in Barcelona. Upon arrival, they find that a highly contagious virus that produces something similar to rabies has spread through the community of neighbors. Trapped inside the building, they will have to try to escape and get out alive.
The first film premiered in 2007 during the Venice Film Festival and the Sitges Film Festival where it impressed critics and audiences in a way never seen before. [•REC] became a true international success and was released in more than 30 countries. The phenomenon gave rise to three sequels, a Hollywood remake and a comic book adaptation. [•REC] is considered a cult film for horror movie lovers. A film that revolutionized, thanks to its style, zombie and infected movies.
The first two films are jointly directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The third installment is directed alone by Plaza and the fourth by Balagueró.
